Japanese-Language Education Programs for 2009-2010

The following programs are open to Canadian educational institutions or individuals. General application procedure information is available on Programs Application Procedures. For a detailed description, click on each program below:

Promotion of Japanese-Language Education
Grant Program for Japanese-Language Courses Abroad
This program assists in the maintenance or expansion of teaching staff in organizations that offer instruction in the Japanese language by providing grant assistance to cover hourly wages for part-time and full-time instructors. It is expected that teaching programs supported with these grants will demonstrate the ability and commitment to become self-supporting in the near future. Organizations involved in Japanese-language education may apply.

Japanese Speech Contest Support Program
This program aims to enhance the level of Japanese-language learning, and develop networks of Japanese-language learners, teachers and institutions through speech contests. Non-profit groups holding regional or national Japanese-language speech contests are eligible to apply.

Grant Program for Developing Networks of Japanese-Language Teachers and Institutions
This program provides partial aid for seminars, workshops, training courses and academic meetings related to Japanese-language education carried out by non-profit organisations for the purpose of developing networks of Japanese-language teachers and institutions. Non-profit organisations involved in Japanese-language education, such as teachers' associations, academic societies, and higher educational and research institutions, etc. are eligible to apply.

Training for Japanese-Language Teachers Abroad
Training Programs for Leading Teachers of the Japanese Language
1) Graduate Program on the Japanese Language and Culture (Master's course)
This program is designed to provide oveseas teachers of the Japanese language, who are expected to be academic leaders of Japanese-Language education, with an opportunity to obtain a Master's degree in Japanese-language education. This program is offered at three institutions: The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa, the National Institute for the Japanese Language, and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. Applications from individuals are acceptable.

2) Graduate Program on the Japanese Language and Culture (Doctoral course)
This program is designed to provide Japanese-language teachers abroad the opportunity to complete a three-year doctoral course in Japanese-language education with the aim of developing them into future academic leaders of Japanese-language education in their own countries. Applications must be submitted directly to the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS).

3) Advanced Training Program for Teachers of the Japanese Language
This program is designed for individuals and teams of up to 3 people who require more advanced expertise and skills as teachers of Japanese, have specific challenges they wish to address, and have issues they want to resolve in the teaching of the Japanese language (e.g. development of teaching materials, teaching methods, curriculums, etc.). Applications are accepted from both native and non-native speakers of Japanese. Educational institutions that carry out Japanese-Language education are eligible to apply. Applications from individuals will not be accepted.

Training Programs for Teachers of the Japanese Language

The following programs' grantees are invited to Japan and stay at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institute, Urawa (Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture)

1) Long-Term Training Program for Foreign Teachers of the Japanese Language
This six-month course in the Japanese language and its fundamental teaching methodology is designed for those who are early in their teaching careers, who have more than six months and less than five years teaching experience. A training course in Japanese language and basic teaching methods will be conducted. Educational institutions may apply on behalf of candidates that meet the criteria listed in the application.

2) Short-Term Training Program for Foreign Teachers of the Japanese Language
This two-month intensive course in teaching methodology will be conducted for foreign teachers of the Japanese language who have at least two years of experience in teaching. Groups are organised according to the student level they teach. Educational institutions may apply on behalf of candidates that meet the criteria listed in the application.

Japanese-Language Programs for Specialists
Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields
This program is an intensive training course in Japanese for specialists (researchers, postgraduate students, librarians and museum curators, etc.) who need a good command of Japanese language to conduct field-related work and research.

Donation of Japanese-Language Teaching Materials
Program for the Donation of Japanese-Language Teaching Materials
Through this program, a variety of teaching materials and resources are donated to educational institutions offering regular courses in the Japanese language. The donations are to become the property of the recipient institutions, and are not to be owned privately by teachers or students. Educational institutions offering regular courses in the Japanese language are eligible to apply.
