What is Nihongo Art?

Nihongo Art is a unique way to express inventive ideas about Japanese words (kanji and hiragana) through illustrations. The 2005 Nihongo Art Contest deadline, open to Japanese-language students in Ontario, is June 30, 2006. For more information about the Nihongo Art Contest, visit http://www.nihongoart.org.

Last year Ontario Japanese-language students submitted 135 drawings by the June 30, 2005 deadline. The work has been on display on rotation in The Japan Foundation, Toronto library since November 2005.

Nihongo Art Contest 2006

Presented by the Nihongo Art Contest Organizing Committee (NACOC)

We are happy to announce that we are going to organize the third annual a Nihongo Art Contest for 2006.

Nihongo Art is a unique way to express inventive ideas about Kanji (Chinese Characters) and Hiragana words through illustrations. All students can participate in this creative and fun project. Please encourage your students to participate in this wonderful, fun opportunity. Submissions of art are to be sent by mail.

Submission Information

1. Participants: Grades 1 to 12 students currently studying Japanese at an educational institution in Ontario
2. Categories: A. Hiragana Art, B. Kanji Art
3. Number of submissions: A maximum of two submissions per student. One category can be submitted one entry only.
4. Teacher participation- A teacher must register as a “supporting member” of NACOC to act as a project coordinator to organise and submit the artwork. Please download a Supporting Member Form.
5. Notice- Submissions will not be returned. Winning entries will be used for travelling exhibitions. In addition, NACOC will have the right to edit, publish, promote and otherwise use all submissions without notice or compensation, in any and or all media now known or hereafter developed.
All entries must have an ENTRY FORM attached.
6. Submission Deadline: All entries must be received by June 30, 2006.

Submission criteria

All entries must meet the following criteria;
1. Use a letter-size paper or smaller. (maximum size 8.5”x11”)
2. Artwork to be submitted in a plastic clear holder.
3. No 3-D artwork will be accepted.
4. Unique modifications are welcome but must maintain the basic figures of Hiragana and Kanji.
5. Regarding Hiragana words, broken or incorrect spelling will not be eligible.
6. Regarding Kanji, only use symbols that express a concept.
7. Regarding Hiragana, Hiragana unrelated to the word cannot be added.
8. The design must be related to the core meaning of the chosen/related Hiragana work or Kanji.
9. Themes not accepted include violence, drugs, nudity or anything that could be considered vulgar or disrespectful.
10. Colour illustrations are encouraged. Computer graphics are also welcome.
11. The artwork must be original. Please avoid using other copyrighted materials. The right to use such materials is protected by law.

Nihongo Art Contest 2004 Touring Exhibition Loan

The Nihongo Art Contest 2004 Touring Exhibition is available for loan at no charge to educational institutions offering Japanese-language courses.

The purpose of the touring exhibition is to introduce Nihongo Art to students and schools who live outside Toronto. The contents consist of 135 letter-size colour reproductions of original drawings. The exhibit is available only for the educational purpose of Japanese-language teaching.

Terms and Conditions

A loan will be available for up to one month at a time, and the touring exhibition materials must be returned without delay to The Japan Foundation, Toronto. Loans may be extended with a renewed application. Due to the copyright issues, this resource will not be available for sale.

Copyright

The Nihongo Art Contest 2004 Touring Exhibition materials are protected by Japanese and international copyright laws. No reproduction (including copying), distribution (including transmitting on the internet), public performance (including broadcasting), public display or modification (including secondary use) of the work will be permitted.

Feedback

A questionnaire will be included with the loan to monitor feedback from viewers. Schools will be expected to complete the questionnaire and return it to The Japan Foundation, Toronto address.
