Overview
The Independent Research Program at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa (JFJLI, Urawa), or Kansai (JFJLI, Kansai) is a residential program (from five days to one month) during which Japanese-language teachers may utilize the resources at the JFJLI in order to solve specific challenges or issues relevant to teaching the Japanese language (e.g. the development of Japanese teaching materials, teaching methods, curricula). Both native and non-native speakers of Japanese are eligible to apply for this program.

Duration
Five-day to one-month period ending before March 31, 2013, subject to availability.
* Applications should be submitted to the Japan Foundation, Toronto no later than one month before the program starts.

Program Venue and Lodging
The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa (or NC, located at Kita Urawa, Urawa-ku, Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture) or The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai (or KC, located at Tajiri-cho, Sennan-gun, Osaka Prefecture)
The library in NC primarily maintains a collection of Japan-language pedagogy materials. KC primarily maintains a collection of Japanese cultural and social references for Japanese-language learners.

Description of the Program
Based on the Study Plan: Outline of Research and Challenges detailed in the application, participants can independently develop research activities utilizing the resources at the JFJLI. Consultation meetings with JFLI Lecturers may be arranged upon request. One or two meetings may be scheduled depending on the length of the stay. The request must be made at the time of application. Challenges and issues related to a variety of themes will be addressed and may include pedagogic method research, syllabus development, and textbook compilation planning. Participants are requested to submit reports on the results of the training within a year of completing the program.
